On Saturday afternoon, the international “Popolo del Cibo” roadshow left Piazza Castello, the square lying behind the Castello Sforzesco, in order to start its itinerant tour of several countries with stopovers during the next few months including New York, Rome, Tokyo, Beijing, Moscow, Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro to raise awareness about the challenges and opportunities offered by Expo Milano, scheduled to be held in the city of Milan from 1 May to 31 October 2015.
This itinerant tour will travel around the world showcasing statues created by Italian set designer Dante Ferretti, winner of three Oscar awards, who has been entrusted with the task of presenting the theme of the Universal Exposition “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life” to the public at large.
Seven original urban installations measuring 3.5 metres in height, inspired by Milanese artist Arcimboldo and the main food elements found in all cultures throughout the world which, in Ferretti’s mind are primarily associated with Italy’s culinary and artisan tradition. Several reproductions are already on display in Milan at the Stazione Centrale, the Triennale and in Largo Beltrami and will shortly also be able to be viewed in piazza San Babila and at the airports of Malpensa and Linate.
The first stopover of the tour will be in New York where two statues, Enolo and Fornaro, will be exhibited in the gardens of the Museum of Modern Art, during the solo exhibition that MoMa will be dedicating to Dante Ferretti and will be viewed, on 26 September, by Italy’s prime minister Enrico Letta.
