Italian Conference Market Report: a positive outlook only in terms of foreign delegate attendance

In a scenario prevalently marked by a negative fluctuation, the only positive data are the figures related to international demand which registered a  +3,20% in foreign delegates against the -6.40% related to national delegates. These are the results revealed by the new Italian Conference Market Report (Osservatorio Congressuale Italiano) regarding 2011, presented by the Federcongressi&eventi association, holder of the trademark, in collaboration with Exmedia and conducted by the University of Bologna and Rimini’s Tourist Manager Association.

Presented a few days ago, during the Federcongressi&eventi board meeting, the survey was conducted on a sample of 5,260 facilities (much larger than the previous survey), restricting the number of participants to 10 for the event selection threshold.

As previously mentioned, the percentage data registered by the report are anything but positive: compared to 2010, figures for 2011 showed a  downturn of -2. 88% in terms of meetings (with an absolute value of more than 400 thousand), -3.01% in terms of participants (almost 33 million), - 13.10% in terms of days of congress attendance (48 and a half million) and -12.82% in terms of overnights (more than 20 million).

As regards the choice of locations, congress hotels continue to hold a prime position (34%),followed by convention centres (21%). A common denominator is the decrease in attendees and turnover while downturns in congress hotels are lower  (-7.20% against the -13.25% of congress centres). Conversely, the number of meetings and participants continues to hold showing percentages of respectively +0.20% and +1.38%).

Prices have remained more or less stable (+0.28%) and although companies continue to be the main customers in terms of events organized (64%) they are also the segment which has registered the most significant downturn in terms of number of events promoted (-10.1%).

Urban centres and art cities/metropolises are the destinations that have been the worst hit by the crisis (respectively -5.22% and – 2.57% in regard to the number of meetings and -15.87% and -14.95% in terms of turnover), while seaside resorts registered the best performances with 0.08% of events, and +0.37% in terms of participants.
