Milan’s historic Excelsior Gallia hotel set to re-open at the beginning of 2014

Restructuring of Milan’s historic Excelsior Gallia, situated in the vicinity of Milan’s Central Station, is currently under way and due to be completed for re-opening at the end of January next year.

Acquired a few years ago by an international investment fund of Qatar, the five-star hotel has been subjected to an enlargement and restructuring project that falls within the wider urban redevelopment process of  piazza Duca d'Aosta lying adjacent to the station.

Renovation of the hotel includes restoration of its original facade dating back to the 1930s and enlargement of the structure with the construction of a new, modern steel and glass building. Following selection by an international panel, the project was awarded to architectural firm Marco Piva which, in collaboration with Cassina, will also be responsible for its interior design.

The renovated hotel will thus feature 235 rooms, including 45 suites, one Presidential Suite and one Royal Suite.

Always as part of the redevelopment of the urban area surrounding the station, the Excelsior Gallia has been granted permission by the City of Milan to use the area behind the hotel in exchange for the redevelopment and maintenance of the small pedestrian island around the building.
