On Monday, 14 January, Italy’s Prime Minister Mario Monti inaugurated the new High Speed Torino Porta Susa AV railway station, the second Italian hub to be completed after Rome Tiburtina.

Situated between corso Bolzano and the tree-lined avenue of viale “Spina, the station consists of a steel and glass gallery measuring 385 metres in length ( the same as that of a high speed Frecciarossa train) and approximately 30 metres in length. The project, which cost 79 million euros, reinterprets the urban galleries of Italian cities and the grand halls of 19th century stations. The structure, built in full respect of its urban surroundings, won the Solare Europeo Prize for its covered vault, constructed using a system of solar panels which allows for recovery of part of the electricity requirements of the entire station.

The levels hosting the various means of transportation (HS, regional trains, the underground system, taxis, cars, buses, trams, motorbikes and bicycles) are connected by means of pedestrian walkways that guarantee continuity with the outlying urban areas.

The urban gallery hosts service areas dedicated to travellers and entertainment (for business, cultural and refreshment purposes) housed in transparent steel and glass structures, while car parks and rooms used for technical purposes are located on the two lower levels.

The Turin hub is one of the five new High Speed stations (Rome Tiburtina, Bologna Centrale, Florence Belfiore and Naples Afragola) which the Italian State Railways has entrusted to architects of international renown.
