Rome: in 2012, 12 million tourists visited the capital, 70% of whom hailed from abroad

In spite of the economic downturn, Rome continues to be one of the world’s favourite tourist destinations, especially with foreigners. In fact, according to the data released by the Ente Bilaterale del Turismo nel Lazio (Ebtl), presented during the Art Cities Exchange & Med Workshop event which ended yesterday at Rome’s Palazzo dei Congressi, 2012 registered approximately 12 million (+5,1%)  tourist arrivals to the capital, with stays touching on 30 million (+4,3%), with a positive economic outcome of 7.3 billion euros.

More than 70% of arrivals  account for foreigners: tourists from EU countries tend to stay the longest, generally  three nights out of an average stay of  2. 5 nights. In particular, French and German arrivals have increased by 5%, tourists arriving from Russia and the US are increasing with, however, China taking the lead with a +20 percent increase.

As regards tourist spend, out of the 7.3 billion registered, 26.5% accounts for hotel expenditure, 17.2% for restaurants and bars and 20.2% for clothes shopping. Expenditure on museums and galleries has increased by 10% while a 12% decrease has been registered in cinema and performance attendance.
