Veneto voted the tourist destination par excellence by foreign tourist in 2012

In 2012, Veneto once again proved to be the number 1 tourist region in Italy with an influx of  62.351.657  visitors of whom 64. 8% were foreigners, and 15, 818, 525 arrivals, of which  64.7 % accounted for foreigners.

These figures, revealed during the opening of BIT, the International Tourism Trade Fair, which started today in Milan at the Rho Pero fairgrounds, show how for each six overnight stays registered in Italy, more than one is in Veneto.

By analysing the origins of tourists  based on number of overnight stays, German tourists hold the number one ranking showing a 2.6% increase compared to the previous year. Austrian tourists come in at second place with  -2,2% of arrivals; the Dutch come in at third place with an increase of 5.3%; the fourth place is held by the  French who show a decrease of 1.1%; the British are ranked fifth, showing an increase of 9.3%; the Swiss come in sixth with  +4,8%; seventh place is held by American tourists who show an increase of 0. 6%; the Danes hold the number eight slot with +10%; the Russians come in at ninth position with + 19% while tourists from Belgium and Luxembourg are ranked number ten with +0,3%.

The chinese hold the 13th position with + 15.5 % as regards overnight stays but 6th place as regards arrivals with + 17.6%. Among the countries boasting strong economies, figures for the Irish account for +13.3%, + 4.6% for the Indians,  + 2% for the Brazilians and  + 9.3% for South Africans. Conversely, countries negatively affected by the crisis show a strong decrease in tourist arrivals: Spaniards (less 20 percent), the Portuguese  (- 11.1%) and the Greeks (- 32.2%) but also the Italians who show an overall decrease of ’8.7% in terms of overnight stays and 2.9 % in terms of arrivals.

The success of the Veneto as a tourist destination is undoubtedly linked to the vast number of attractions offered by the region, starting with Venice and its surrounding art cities, the area’s Palladian villas, its seaside resorts, beaches, mountains, lakes, thermal baths and, last but not least, the quality of the services offered.
