Sunday, 10 February, Milan inaugurates its innovative M5 subway line

Lilac is the distinctive colour of Milan’s  new M5 subway line scheduled to be inaugurated on Sunday 10 February. The innovative underground line will run from the northern city limits (Bignami) to the western area of San Siro. At the end of the week, the first section, comprising seven stops, will become operative, taking passengers from Bignami to Zara, in just eight minutesl

One of the most advanced in Europe, the M5 subway, built in conformity with the most recent European regulations to guarantee maximum passenger safety, is completely automated (and therefore driverless).

Initially, the trains operating on the new lilac line will run at a frequency of 6 minutes. Furthermore, they will be able to carry 536 passengers (with 72 seats) for a total of 5 thousand passengers per hour.

At the end of the year, another two stops, Isola and Garibaldi, are scheduled to open. There will be 12 carriages and the trains will run every 3 minutes with passenger transport increasing up to a figure of 10 thousand. Construction works on the line as far as San Siro (involving another 10 stops) will be completed in 2015,  in time for Expo Milano 2015.
