Business Travel Survey: in Italy air and rail fares drop and hotel rates decrease

According to Business Travel Survey 2013, the periodic survey on business travel conducted by Uvet American Express on a sample of  700 customer companies boasting travel spends of between €20,000 and €15 million per year, over the past three years, the average cost of air tickets has decreased by 6% for national flights while, due to competition from high-speed train travel, during the second half of 2012, rail tickets dropped, on an average, by 3 euros. Based on the latest edition of the survey, it also emerged that the average prices of air tickets have remained unchanged for European flights while increasing by 2% for international flights.

The average price of overnight stays in 3 or 4 star hotels in major Italian cities are also decreasing. The city showing the most consistent variation (21 percentage points less compared to the second half of 2011) is Florence which has, thus, become the most affordable Italian city boasting average rates of around €97.00 per night.  In Rome, there has been a considerable decrease of €19.00 less per overnight stay with an average of €100.00 (104) per night. Genoa registered a €10.00 decrease with an average of just below €100.00 (99) per night. Hotel rates in Milan have shown a much smaller decrease (from €128.00 in the second half of 2011 to €125.00 during the same period of 2012) while those in Venice, still the most expensive destination in Italy, are more marked (from EUR 166 to EUR  160). In Naples, the average cost of hotels, from the second half of 2011 to the second half of 2012, have remained unchanged (from EUR 101 to EUR 102).

In spite of the decrease in transport and hotel rates, where Italian businesses are in question, the survey reveals an interest in new business destinations, particularly Brazil and Russia,  but also South Africa, the Arab Emirates, Santiago Chile, Johannesburg, Seoul and Mexico City.

As regards the domestic scene, Milan, followed by Rome remains the most popular destination for business travellers while other cities, such as Bari, which surpassed Venice and is hot on the heels of Genoa, Catania and Naples, in fourth place, is definitely gaining popularity
