Sicilia Convention Bureau presents congress data for 2012: census-taking of 941 events

Last year Sicily hosted 941 events, of which 858 were commissioned by Italy and 83 from abroad (the US ranked in number one position with 21 events followed by France with 12, Britain with 8 and Germany with 8. Other countries listed included Belgium, Israel and Switzerland). 110 Sicilian companies participated in the survey conducted by the Sicilia Convention Bureau in collaboration with UniCredit. In short, these are the data that emerged from the 2012 Sicilian Congress Observatory.

Overall, the events involved the participation of 91, 604 delegates and 56, 120 overnight stays, with turnover generated accounting for more than  EUR 23.7 million.

“We have estimated that the census-taking of the 941 events by our Observatory represents approximately 25% of the overall Sicilian market. Therefore, turnover generated by the Congress industry accounts for around EUR 100 million, the same figure registered in 2011 for the industry. All international surveys show that the spin-offs correspond to about one time as much as direct turnover meaning that presumably, overall, the tourist congress sector accounts for about EUR 200 million for the entire region”, commented Maja de’Simoni, General Manager of Sicilia Convention Bureau.

The aforementioned events were held mainly in Catania (563), at hotels (777) and congress resorts (100), above all, during the months of April and May, followed by January and October. In terms of event typology, most were corporate meetings (24%) and congresses (18. 3%). In the commodities sector, medical/scientific meetings (23.1%) prevailed followed by large-scale-retail-trade (20,3%). 2012 marked a significant increase in one-day events (equal to 535) and events hosting from 10 to 49 (equal to 479) and from 50 to 99 (187) delegates.

Data basically proved to be in line with those of the previous years and with general trends in the sector. The study also analysed factors related to unconfirmed event requests (543 in toto) in order, according to Vincenzo Tumminello, President of Sicilia Convention Bureau,  to “evaluate the  gaps that Sicily has to bridge in order to be competitive and a winner”.
