Planning a destination wedding in Italy?

Planning a destination wedding in Italy from abroad can be is a little tricky but not as hard as you might think.

There are a few things that you should know, in order to help you plan everything in advance since you will need to prepare some “vital” paperwork. In fact, with even one document missing, the entire ceremony could be delayed.

For this reason we strongly advise to make use of the services of a local wedding planner: not only because he/she speaks Italian, but also because this person is familiar with the process of preparing the right documents.

The civil ceremony is officiated by an Italian authority, the Major or Civil registrar. It will last about 20 minutes and consists of reading 3 articles of the Italian Civil Code and the marriage vows. It can be personalized with music, personal vows and poetry. One interpreter and 2 witnesses are necessary (they will need to sign the marriage certificate and can be up to 4).

A civil ceremony by law must take place in buildings approved by the Italian government. Famous halls where you can have your civil ceremony are: Palazzo Cavalli in Venice, the Sala Rossa in Florence, Campidoglio Sala Rossa in Rome.

Outdoor ceremonies are allowed only in certain locations approved by the Italian Government. In most cases though they will take place in Town halls.

There are small fees for the required documents at the Consulate and there’s a fee for the rental of the marriage hall, that could vary depending on the marriage hall you choose. These fees vary depending on your citizenship (if you are part of the European Union or from outside the European Union).
