The workshop dedicated to the Italian meeting industry and international events in Italy, entitled Opportunità e strategie di sviluppo del turismo congressuale internazionale in Italia, will be held tomorrow, 10 April at 12.30pm at Palazzo Mezzanotte in Milan.

The seminar will be held within the context of the World Communication Forum which, for the first time, will be dedicating space to this industry.  The World Communication Forum, scheduled to be held on Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 April, is an event that gathers the national marketing community, with the participation of more than 3,000 managers, international speakers, heads of leading multinationals, institutions and delegations of the main international trade associations.

The workshop, which includes a well-established panel of speakers, will be co-ordinated by Gabriele Capolino, manager and associate editor of Milano Finanza and President of the European Business Press (EBP), and Emma Aru, President of PCO Studio Ega.

A number of topics will be dealt with. Following the presentation by Aru of ICCA (International Congress & Convention Association) data regarding associative congresses in Europe in the decade between 2002-2011,those present will analyse the position of Italy which, in 2011, was ranked sixth in the world after hosting 363 large events. The first five rankings went to the US, Germany, Spain, the UK and France. On the contrary, results regarding the positioning of cities were not as favourable. In fact, only 3 Italian cities were ranked in the top 100: Rome (in 19th place with 92 events), Milan (in 62nd place with 32 events, on a par with New York and San Francisco) and Venice (in 99th place with 22 events).

An attempt will be made to understand the reasons for this discrepancy with particular focus on strategies and synergies to bridge this gap, taking advantage for example of Expo 2015 as a showcase not only for Milan but also for the entire Italian congress sector, the cinema as a promotional vehicle for incomings and the restructuring of large sports facilities as events locations.
