CWT: survey on business travel booking methods

The Travel Management Institute of Carlson Wagonlit Travel (CWT), a global company specializing in business travel management and meetings and events, developed a study entitled  Where now for managed travel? “Rogue” spend, new booking technologies and the future of business travel programs, which examines the viewpoints of travel managers and industry experts about travel business management methods.

The survey was conducted between November 2012 and May 2013 and involved a large sample (149 travel managers, 469 travellers/travel arrangers and more than 40 industry experts, belonging to different sectors, different geographical areas and of different sizes, using different travel management methods.

From the survey it emerged that most travel managers do not approve of the so-called unmanaged travel method, while 62% are against it. Furthermore, 87% said that their companies had never tried this management method and have no intention of doing so.

Conversely, traveller satisfaction is a priority for those who have introduced this type of approach or who intend to experiment with it. Among other things, from the analysis it emerges that 45% of CWT’s global bookings are for complex, multi-segment trips and that 45% of European bookings are changed before or after ticketing, indicating the need for close traveller support.

The study shows that “controlled” travel management is more user-friendly, cheaper and represents a more effective way to tackle program leakage. In fact, as shown by other surveys, fares booked through Travel Management Company (TMC) channels cost 9 to 24% less than fares available on the open market.

"It is clear that there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach". To ensure that our clients get the best result from a safety, cost and efficiency perspective, we are working on solutions that will allow our clients to capture essential data at the same time as providing their travelers with a great shopping experience", commented David Moran, executive vice-president, enterprise strategy and marketing of CWT.
