22% of Italian hotel clients prefer to pay cash

In June, the Study Centre of Federalberghi, the association of Italian hoteliers, conducted a survey on payment methods related to tourist-hotel services  used by Italian and foreign clients, with an on-line interview involving 1,625 facilities, chosen randomly to obtain a broad sample throughout Italy.

From the survey it emerged that 42.56% of clients prefer paying by credit card, while 22.19% opt to pay in cash,  in spite of the fact that the limit has been reduced, as an anti-tax evasion measure, to 999 euros per transaction for residents and EU members and 15 thousand euros for non-EU members.

As regards the remaining percentage, 17.63% choose bankcards, 11.01% wire transfers,  6.11% cheques and  0.49% post-pay methods.

On the basis of these results, the President of Federalberghi, Bernabò Bocca, has asked that in order to re-launch the hotel and tourism industry, the 15 thousand euro limit for cash payments also be extended to Italian citizens.

The data that emerged with regard to booking methods was also extremely interesting:  25.63% of bookings are made by telephone, 24.68% via mail,  24.67% via online portals and 18.27% through hotel websites. Generally speaking, in 64.96% of cases, those who book and give a credit card number as a guarantee pay at the end of their stay with a credit card,  16.60% by bankcards, 15.37% in cash and 3.07% by cheque.
