Conventions, what a business for Milan

Convention
Convention

Conventions are good for the economy, especially in Milan. The average daily expenditure for single participant is of 400 Euros in fact, at a big event organised at MiCo, the convention centre managed by Fiera Milano Congressi. The amount rises to 675 Euros pro-capite if one considers also the indirect impact, which results from the effects that the expenses related to the convention produce progressively in the medium-long period on the territory in favour of other economic sectors which are strictly connected to the convention activity.

This has emerged from a survey by the Analysis Laboratory of the International Convention Market (Lamci) of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, in collaboration with Fiera Milano Congressi. The research, directed by Paola Bensi and Roberto Nelli, has been carried out over the period 2012-2014 on a sample of 1,088 delegates who have participated to large events at Milano Congressi. According to the survey of Lamci the first place for the top spenders goes to delegates from Asia, Australia, Oceania, followed by Middle Easterns and Africans who also prolong their stay by a couple of days in the Milanese city.

Europeans and Italians, however, place among those who are less willing to spend. The delegates involved in the survey have spent on average during their stay in Milan 226 Euros per day (excluding long haul transport), with significant differences according to Country of origin: international delegates in fact spend more (239 Euros per day) than the Italians (111 Euros per day).
