2013 has been a two-speed year for the hotel industry in Italy. This has been revealed by the 2013 Report by ther Italian Hotel Monitor, the survey carried out by Trademark Italia. The good news is that the past 12 months have been marked by a slight growth (+0,8%) of the room occupancy, whereas the average price range has marked a decrease curve (-1,7%).

The main 46 cities captured by the Italian Hotel Monitor present a slightly better R.O. (Room Occupancy) than that of the previous year. A detailed look at the individual localities shows evident curves and amazing increases, with two cities above all others: Florence which registers a +3,7% in terms of R.O. and a +2,5% of average price, and Turin with a +2,2% of R.O. and a +2% of average price.

The Italian hotel ecomony barometer shows a step forward in the annual room occupancy in 17 Province capital cities (over 46 monitored), with 14 cities in which the “psychological” threshold of 60& room occupancy has been exceeded, recognised as managing solidity. Even this year, exceeding the 70% quota, is only the City of Florence. 10 cities, mainly in the centre-south of the Country  have been identified in which the room occupancy has been registered below 50%, an evident sign in the decrease of demand. In terms of room occupancy after Florence (74,5%) follow Rome (69,8%), and Venice (67,4%), both showing growth if compared to 2012. As far the the average price per night is concerned (at 110,04 Euros nationwide), the most expensive city is Venice, with over 145 Euros (yet still - 0,5% than 2012), followed by Milan (125,97 Euro, -4,2% less than 2012) and Florence (124, 37 Euros, +2,5% than 2012).

In summary, analysing the various hotel segments, the results show that 5 star and luxury hotels withhold the positions both in terms of rates as in average occupancy of rooms; the 4 star category is more unstable with a +0,8% of room occupancy but a -1,7% in prices; the 3 star structures, lastly, are the ones mostly suffering, with a decrease of 0,6% in occupancy and 3% in rates.
