Business Travel Observatory, optimism is back

Goodbye pessimism. Even though the data is not yet brilian, the predictions for 2014 and the future give high hopes for a regain in business trips in Italy. The good news comes from the Business Travel Observatory for Corporate Tourism, presented at BIT - International Chamber of Tourism in Milan.

The research, which has involved 1,500 companies, has been carried out by Professor Andrea Guizzardi and is made possible thanks to the scientific and technical support of the Scuola Superiore di Scienze Turistiche and the patronage of the Statistic Science Department of the  University of Bologna. Among the official sponsors are airberlin, HRG Italia and HRS - Hotel Reservation Service with the support of AirPlus International Italia.

The 13th edition of the survey "Travel, profit and satisfaction of Italian business tourism clients in 2013" has analised the trend of business travel in the past year. Even though the national financial situation, however showing slight recovery, still shows signs of weakness - in 2013 business travel decreased by 0,2% as against 2012, for a total of 29,8 million trips - the expenditure is increasing. In fact in 2013 the total expenditure for business trips increased to 18,8 billion Euros, with a +2,1% compared to the previous year. This fact thus conferms last year's forecast - when the "pessism trap" was being mentioned as the effect of the preservering of the economic crisis and forecast of an increase in the total acquisitions close to 2,1%, effectively realised - but it seems to mark the end of the negative phase for the travel market, in light of the fact that in 2014 the forecasts for travel managers are once again positive. 21% of those interviewed declares the possibility of increase in expenditure in the next twelve months, 76% estimate a stataionary situtation of costs, and only 3% confirm a decrease.

"The clear prevail of the "stationary" evaluations on the effect of expenditure in 2014, seems to anticipate a limited growth" emphasises Guizzardi. But this is also due to an amount of "caution by those interviewed in expressing their thoughts. There are enough elements to conclude that the evaluations of the travel managers are compatible with a 2014 market growth by a percentage between 3 and 5%." Another interesting fact that highlights how much "train use has increased for business travel: mostly thanks to high speed trains, an increase of 11% is registered compared to 2012.
