Italian Cities, smart but not enough

Rome
Rome

The smartest Italian city? Rome, together with Bologna, Turin and Florence. This has been revealed by a study carried out by Between, a consulting company in the Ict sector, which has traced a ranking on "Smart Cities" for culture and tourism. The results have been that in Italy the locations that are visible and accessible on the web are still very few, with a huge competitive gap at an international level.

The analysis is a useful indicator even for those who deal with business travel, convention organisation or for those professionals who often travel for business: it is becoming ever so common in fact to look for information via web, choosing websites, apps, social networks or technologies that are capable of collecting digitally the cultural-touristic offer of the various localities. At a national level, the research shows that the smartest city is Rome. The Capital, in fact, offers a system of telematic portals that allows to obtain information and also book hotels and monuments as well as many other services via web and app.

The average artistic and touristic cities follow in the ranking: Rimini, Ferrara, Ravenna, Bolzano and Bergamo are however in the "top 10". Among the smaller cities (with less than 80,000 inhabitants) Siena is the only one among the first ten together with Urbino, which is among the first 20. Reggio Calabria is the first city from the South (at 11th place), and on the whole only 6 southern cities are in the first batch (apart from Reggio Calabria, are also Lecce, Cagliari, Olbia, Catania, Naples and Potenza).

The Smart City Index signals also how Italian cities are moving towards technology in tourism and in culture: how they turn to the web for promotion and sales, how they use social networks to divide its clientele, and to link its services to communities, how they distribute mobility services through apps, how they give value to culture through new technologies. Unfortunately, there is still a lot to be done, even in the Mice environment: only 14% of the Municipalities offer the possibility to book facilities online, starting from their specific website or through their own dedicated web pages dedicated to tourism and culture. Only four Municipalities offer the acquisition of tickets for museums, monuments etc online. In the worse cases, information is too scattered on the various territorial websites, a common entry point is missing and clear links among portals created by proper public entities (the Municipality, the Province, the Region, APT, etc) that provide for the same territory are missing.
