How has the convention market changed in the years and particularly associations conventions? Which are the emerging and consolidated trends? To answer these questions and many more, and with the objective to prepare for future scenarios, Convention Bureau della Riviera di Rimini (CBRR), a company of Rimini Fiera Group, has commissioned Meeting Consultants a research, "Association demand: characteristics and trends today". The report compiled by Gabriella Ghigi and Maria Gabriella Gentile is based upon research carried out through questionaires to representatives of national and international associations, telephone interviews to Italian Professional Congress Organizers working in the associations sector and on the available data of the latest research of the sector.

Associations conventions represent, infact, an economic reality that expresses a constant growth trend, as emerges from the ICCA report: "A Modern History of International Association Meetings. 1963-2012". Associations conventions, from the '60s to the present, have double every ten years. Today, there are 23,000 association conventions organised throughout the world on a regular basis and 54,844 the census conventions in the 2008-2012 qinquennial with almost 22 million of participants (of which 2,199 in Italy for a total of 933,209 participants).

Europe attract the largest number of international associations conventions: 54% during 2008-2012. In the last 50 years, Italy has always been among the first 10 nations to host international associations conventions. Always at an international level, the main thematic areas of associations conventions discussed: medical sciences (17.2%), the scientific segment (13%), whereas technological was the one that registered the major growth. Today it is at second place with 14.5%.

Also profits are on the rise: in the last 25 years, it grew from 18,8 billion USD during the period 1993-1997 to 56,4 billion USD during 2008-2012. It seems, however, a trend which restrains costs: the average total expenditure per convention has decreased: 1,028,027 USD during 2008-2012 against the 1,114,637 USD during 1993-1997. In time, the sizes of meetings has diminished, from 1,253 participants at the beginning of the 1960's to 424 participants during the period 2008-2012, and the duration, from 6,3 days at the beginning of the 1960's to 3,8 days in the period 2008-2012.

As far as location is concerned, the strongest competitors of the convention centers are the hotels. Convention centers during the period 2008-2012 have hosted 24,3% of the events against 27,7% of the previous decade.
