"The Italian capital of culture 2016 is Mantua": this was announced with a tweet by the Minister of Cultural Heritage Dario Franceschini. The finalist cities were 10: apart from Mantua, Aquileia, Como, Ercolano, Parma, Pisa, Pistoia, Spoleto, Taranto and Terni. "This competition - said the Minister - is very important: there was a first group of twenty four cities of which a shortlist of ten cities remained. I am therefore very proud and also convinced that next year we will have many more cities in the competition. Our objective is to design at the beginning of each year the Italian capital of culture for the following year. At the beginning of 2016 therefore we will identify the Capital for 2017."
The Ministry will allocate a million Euros which will be used by the city of the Gonzaga to put together a year long cultural project which will further enrich the offer of the land of the poet Virgil, already rich enough to appear among the Unesco Heritage sites. "It is not just a million Euros that we will receive - said the Mayor of Mantua Mattia Palazzi – which naturally in these times does not hurt. It is, however, the recognition of such an extraordinary city, unique, a small city with an international vocation, an extraordinary heritage. We are trying to open up to the world."
A museum-city in which culture is resident: it in fact hosts since 1997 Festivaletteratura, which gathers authors and intellectuals from all over the world and opens up the localities to hundreds of events of every type.
